Legal Requirements

For beneficiaries of the New Legal Code

A resident of Puerto Rico or establish their residence within the term granted by the legislation (120 days to transfer practice to Puerto Rico if they are not a resident and obtain a favorable determination)

The physician must perform community service (180 hours per year) or provide services through the Government Health Program.

Admitted to the practice of medicine in Puerto Rico (the definition of "qualified physician" is the following: individual admitted to the practice of medicine, podiatry, or any specialty of dentistry who exercises his profession full time. This definition includes physicians who are pursuing their residency studies as part of a duly accredited program.).

You must actively practice the profession throughout the term of the decree. "Full Time" means that a qualified physician dedicates at least 100 monthly hours to provide professional medical services in a public or private hospital, in a federal or state agency, in an office private dedicated to offering professional medical services, or in a duly accredited medical school."
